How to Maintain Your Optimism When You Find Yourself in the Back of a Police Car in China

The Chinese policeman opened the door for me on a chilly spring day in Xi’an and gestured for me to step inside the vehicle. I ducked my head as I crouched into the police car, stepping over the dirty floor and placing my bottom down on the ripped seats next to another policeman. All policemen lit a cigarette, disregarded the need for seat belts, turned on the sirens and drove us to the cop shop.
